The best way to stand still on skates is in this position:
- Stand in the ready position
- Turn your right foot out so that it points at 3 o'clock
- Pull the heel of the right skate into the middle of the left one
- Relax your knees a bit
If you look at your feet you'll see they make a T shape on the ground: the left foot is the top of the T. Your feet can't roll around because they either block each other from moving, or you can pull them together.
I call this the right foot safe-T and, obviously, there is a left foot version too: replace right with left and left with right in the instructions above!
You can swap between the two of these, which is good practice:
- Stand in the right foot safe-T
- Roll the right foot out slightly
- Roll the left foot forward slightly
- Pull the right foot back in
- Pull the left foot back so the heel is in the middle of the right skate (and you're in the left foot safe-T)
If you use this position to stand on a hill my advice is to stand with the top of the T across the slope and the vertical bit pointing up the slope. To explain: in the right foot safe-T the left foot would be across the slope, the right one would point up the hill.
If you can, try to make both skates lean onto slightly outside edges. It just makes things easier to hold together and is slightly more comfortable.
